Gone are the days when someone would walk into a home and say “Oh, you’ve got
one of those fake fireplaces”. Gas fireplaces now offer realistic log sets in
a realistic setting, with the ambiance you would expect from a real wood fire.
In addition, you can also get a high efficiency furnace rated heat source, which
operates at the flick of a switch or can operate on a thermostat independent of
an outside power source.

Direct Vent uses a sealed firebox. Outside air is drawn into the stove
or fireplace for combustion, and the exhaust gases are vented back out. This reduces
drafts and increases efficiency, as heated room air is not used for combustion.
Venting versatility is a plus with this method as venting can be straight out
the wall, through the ceiling, into an existing chimney, or even through a fireplace.
This system is well suited for today’s tighter homes where air infiltration is
greatly reduced.
B Vent is open to the atmosphere. Room air is drawn into the stove or fireplace for combustion. Venting is generally through an existing interior chimney or fireplace. As combustion air must be replaced, this system works best in an older home, which is less airtight.
Vent Free is a controversial system that is virtually an open fire. Room air is used for combustion and the ensuing by-products are exhausted into the room. It is intended as a decorative appliance, not as a heat source. Instructions generally require a window be open 6” while the appliance is in operation. This restricts the use to warmer climates and to summer camps.
