Fireplace inserts, both wood and gas, are an increasingly popular way to solve the problem of wood fireplace inefficiency. Sized to fit most fireplaces, whether masonry or manufactured, inserts seal off the fireplace, deliver warmth, and do so with cost saving efficiency. Inserts can also solve many of those “problems” such as cold drafts, smoking and downdrafts.

Sizing
Selection of an insert with the appropriate output is crucial in satisfying your heating needs. The following sizes, BTU’s and approximate areas that can be heated are simply guidelines. Other factors such as heat loss, circulation, and types of construction have a major impact on the effectiveness of the heating appliance.

Venting Options
Direct Vent uses a sealed firebox. Outside air is drawn into the stove or fireplace for combustion, and the exhaust gases are vented back out. This reduces drafts and increases efficiency, as heated room air is not used for combustion. Venting versatility is a plus with this method as venting can be straight out the wall, through the ceiling, into an existing chimney, or even through a fireplace. This system is well suited for today’s tighter homes where air infiltration is greatly reduced.

B Vent is open to the atmosphere. Room air is drawn into the stove or fireplace for combustion. Venting is generally through an existing interior chimney or fireplace. As combustion air must be replaced, this system works best in an older home, which is less airtight.
